How should we eat in the age of climate change? And how can democracy help us deal with the issue? Bonniers Konsthall and Fri Tanke Förlag invite you to join an evening of conversation in the wake of the climate crisis.
Cooking Sections is the name of the artist duo of Alon Schwabe and Daniel Pascual Fernandez. They made the film Kivalina, The Coming Storm, which is currently on view at Bonniers Konsthall. In a conversation with curator Caroline Elgh Klingborg, the two will discuss their artistic practice, which explores the overlapping boundaries between the visual arts, ecology, architecture, and geopolitics. Also on hand will be Daniel Lindvall, who will be giving a talk about climate denial as a political movement based on his newly published book, Upphettning.
The film Kivalina, The Coming Storm is rooted in a research project that Cooking Sections (together with Andrea Bagnato, Helene Kazan and Hannah Meszaros-Martin) conducted on Kivalina, an island off the northwest coast of Alaska. They were invited to work together with the local population to look at alternative ways of approaching the question of how climate change impacts the island and its inhabitants. Through interviews with residents, environmental researchers, and elected officials, they model forth an image of Kivalina and the challenges the island is confronting.
The book Upphettning – Demokratin i klimatkrisens tid by Daniel Lindvall, Kjell Vowles, and Martin Hultman is a deep dive into climate denial as a political movement. Based on current research, the book discusses the challenges that global warming holds for democratic governance, with questions such as: Why does the authoritarian nationalist movement so actively oppose climate science? Are there ways to reduce emissions and establish a stable democracy in the future?
