Music – Sisyphus

The Sisyphus ballet premiered in 1957, with Erik Lindegren, also the author of Aniara, writing the libretto. The title Sisyphus refers to Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld’s endless attempts to establish peace on earth, and how his efforts were similar to Greek mythological figure Sisyphus, who was forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill for all eternity. The concert version was finished by 1954, whilst this version was recorded by the Swedish Royal Opera in 1979. Two songs from the concert are featured here – The Dance with Death and The Dance of Life.
