Bokförläggaren och konsten
In connection with the exhibition On the Other Side of the Shift, Bonniers Konsthall, in collaboration with Albert Bonniers Förlag, is publishing Bokförläggaren och konsten. The legendary publisher Gerard Bonnier (1917–1987) was also a key figure in Swedish art life for several decades. His strong commitment took many forms, but most notably a passionate approach to collecting. From the mid-1940s to the late 1980s, Gerard Bonnier assembled an extraordinary collection of Swedish and international contemporary art.
With the help of previously unpublished letters, photographs, reviews, and private view cards, the book offers a fascinating insight into Gerard Bonnier’s life with art and his close friendships with artists and museum professionals. The material—reproduced in facsimile, creating a vivid sense of the time and context—also reflects the strong ties between literature and the visual arts that characterize the publishing house.
The book’s main chapter is a documentation of the art collection that Gerard Bonnier placed in the offices of Albert Bonniers Förlag on Sveavägen. The newly taken photographs show how naturally art is integrated into the publishing house, while also highlighting some of the finest works produced in Swedish postwar art.
The book includes texts by, among others, Ulf Linde and Nina Öhman, and the material has been compiled by Dr. Niclas Östlind. He is a senior lecturer at Akademin Valand, a writer, and a curator, and served as editor-in-chief for Collected Works! 30 Years with the Maria Bonnier Dahlin Foundation (2016). He is also responsible for the exhibition On the Other Side of the Shift: Swedish Art 1947–1987 from the Collection of Albert Bonniers Förlag, shown at Bonniers Konsthall in the summer of 2017.
