Film Screening: Grey Earth (2026) by Dana Kavelina
—
The stop-motion film Grey Earth brings together a soldier stationed at the front with a cow from an industrial dairy farm, as they enjoy a moment of sudden freedom after an explosion. Through meticulous work with handmade puppets and set designs, Dana Kavelina recreates the processes of nature and destruction, through cycles of life, war and extraction. Here, the ground appears as a living entity, exhausted by both warfare and industrial agriculture.
Dana Kavelina (1995, Melitopol) is a Ukrainian artist who, through animated videos, installations, paintings and prints, deals with military violence and the distance between historical and personal trauma, memory and distortion. The film was originally produced for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Visual Culture Research Center, and RIBBON International for the Kyiv Biennale 2025. Co-produced with steirischer herbst ’25 with support from Bonniers Konsthall.
