Magdalena Malm, director of the Swedish Public Art Agency, Ola Andersson, architect and author, Lars Mikael Raattamaa, architect and author, and artist Lisa Torell, one of the collaborating artists in City Walks, discuss current issues concerning the role of art in city development with art critic Ingela Lind.
The final Wednesday evening of the exhibition will be devoted to contemporary issues concerning art and politics. How can civic issues and social engagement be intertwined with art, architecture and culture? And just what are the issues with which today’s city artists are concerned? Many of the artworks included in the exhibition address issues of urbanization, city development, and cultural identity. William Kentridge utilizes charcoal drawings and animation to express the story of Johannesburg’s dark past. With artisanal perfection, Lisa Torell translates the setting of the Swedish Million Programme into collages and sculptures. Carlos Garaicoa works with the architecture of his hometown Havana, which largely lays in ruins, a result of his country’s economic standstill. The artists insist on addressing the very things that surround us in the urban environment.
The evening will include discussions of art, architecture and city development, with examples taken from Stockholm, Sweden, as well as the rest of the world.
