Film Screening:  Le Livre d’Image (2018) by Jean-Luc Godard

The essay film Le Livre d’image (The Image Book), Jean-Luc Godard’s last film, is based on a montage of movie clips, paintings and pieces of music in an investigation of the history of cinema and its inability to acknowledge the atrocities of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Godard is said to have been inspired by Peter Weiss’s novel The Aesthetics of Resistance in the work, and the film ends with a quote from the book, among other things. Jean-Luc Godard (1930–2022) was a French-Swiss film director, screenwriter and film critic, and is considered one of the leading filmmakers of the French New Wave. The film was awarded the Special Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
