Artists in Sprout from White Nights

Cao Fei

Cao Fei works with performance, photography, sound, text and film. Recently she has developed projects that take place in the virtual world Second Life. In 2007 she participated in the biennials in Lyon, Istanbul and Venice. Cao Fei was born in 1978 in Guangzhou, and lives and works in Beijing.

Cao Fei exhibits the following works: RMB City A Second Life Planning (2008), UN-Cosplayers (2006) and Utopia Factory (2006).

Chu Yun

Chu Yun works primarily with installations. He participated in the exhibition China Power Station II at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Norway, in 2007. Chu Yun was born in 1977 in Jiangxi, and lives and works in Beijing.

Chu Yun contributes to the exhibition with Constellation No. 2 (2006), Unspeakable Happiness (2003), Chu Yun’s Work (2006) and Tape Recording, 1984 (2006).

 Hipic Group (Xu Zhen, Yang Zhenzhong, Huang Kui)

Hipic is an art project initiated by the Shanghai-based artists Xu Zhen, Yang Zhenzhong and Huang Kui. The web-based project, which centres on pictures, was initiated in September 2007, and is also displayed at public places in Shanghai and at exhibitions in China and Europe.

Hipic Group contributes to the exhibition with their work Hipic, displayed on a designed monitor. The collective artwork functions as a commentary on the modern flow of imagery. Anyone in the world can send a picture to Hipic’s website, where it will be displayed for one minute.

Hu Xiaoyuan

Hu Xiaoyuan’s installations often comprise everyday materials such as sewing-thread, hair and fabric. Her work has been exhibited at Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany, and at Kunsthaus Graz, Austria, in 2007. Hu Xiaoyuan was born in 1977 in Harbin, and lives and works in Beijing.

Hu Xiaoyuan contributes to the exhibition with her works Three Clothes, Six Objects (2007–2008) and Useless (2008).

Kan Xuan

Kan Xuan works primarily with video, but also utilises photography and installation. Her work has been exhibited in the Chinese pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennial and at the Istanbul Biennial the same year. Kan Xuan was born in 1972, and lives and works in Beijing and Amsterdam, Holland.

Kan Xuan contributes to the exhibition with her works Looking Looking Looking For (2001), Untitled (2008), Protected by Colours (2003), Love (2008), I Will Be Happy? (2008) and 100 Times (2003).

Lee Kit

Lee Kit’s works function as utility goods and artworks at the same time. Lee Kit was born in 1978 in Hong Kong, where he lives and works.

Lee Kit’s hand-painted pieces of fabric function as table cloths and wall decorations in the Konsthall’s café. Any spots which land on the fabrics through their use become a part of the work. Through photographs, the artist documents how he had previously used the hand-painted fabrics: as towels, bedcovers or picnic blankets. The sugar packets in the Konsthall’s café have also been designed by Lee Kit.

Liu Wei

Liu Wei works with painting, installation, sculpture and video. His work has been shown in the exhibition China Power Station II at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Norway, in 2007. Liu Wei was born in 1972 in Beijing, where he lives and works.

Liu Wei contributes to the exhibition with his works Purple Air (2008), 7 Nights (2007) and As Long As I See It (2006).

Xu Tan

Xu Tan’s research-based projects originate in interviews and workshops. By inviting participants from different places of the world, Xu Tan opens up for a discussion on our perception of today’s China. Xu Tan was born in Wuhan in 1957, and lives and works in Zhuhai and Shanghai.

Xu Tan contributes to the exhibition with an installation and a workshop, Keywords School (2006–2008).

Yan Jun

Yan Jun is a sound artist and poet. He has participated in exhibitions such as Seoul International Media Art Biennial 2006, and in China Power Station I at Battersea Power Station in London, UK,  and has published several books and collections of poetry. Yan Jun was born in 1973 in Lanzhou, and lives and works in Beijing.

Yan Jun contributes to the exhibition with his work 15 Minutes in Life (2007). The inspiration for this sound composition is the new urban China, and comprises voices and Chinese city sounds interlaced with music. The soundtrack can be heard in numerous places in the Konsthall.

Yang Fudong

Yang Fudong takes contemporary China as his starting point for his filmmaking, but often refers to Chinese history and older films. His work has been exhibited at the 2003 and 2007 Venice Biennials. Yang Fudong was born in 1971 in Beijing, and lives and works in Shanghai.

Yang Fudong contributes to the exhibition with his video installation East of Que Village (2006).

Yangjiang Group (Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan, Sun Qinglin)

Yangjiang Group is an artist group founded in 2002 in the city of Yangjiang in southern China. With calligraphy as the point of departure, members Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan and Sun Qinglin work with performance, installation, video and photography. Yangjiang Group has exhibited at Tate Liverpool, UK, in 2007 and at Kunsthaus Graz, Austria, in 2007.

Yangjiang Group contributes to the exhibition with works Indoor Courtyard IV (2003/2007) and Pine Tree Garden (2008).

Zhang Da

Zhang Da is a fashion designer. Inspired by traditional Chinese techniques, he is also interested in the contemporary wear-and-throw-away culture. Zhang Da was born in 1970, and lives and works in Shanghai and Beijing.

Zhang Da has developed exhibition-specific accessories for the Konsthall’s host: masks, arm bands and neckpieces. The arm bands were inspired by armguards traditionally worn by Chinese workers. The pattern on the fabric consists of summer flowers, candles and soft rain.

Zheng Guogu

Zheng Guogu is a member of Yangjian Group and works with photography, objects, performance and calligraphy. His works are often based on collaborations in which a performance may be the starting point for a photographic series. Zheng Guogu participated in Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany, 2007 and Kunsthaus Graz, Austria, the same year. Zheng Guogu was born in 1970 in Yangjiang, where he lives and works.
